With all of the wonderful festivals, arts, shows and music that are going on in Durham, sometimes we forget that we have a championship AAA baseball team. In fact, the Durham Bulls are the Tampa Devil Rays top farm club. I was able to attend two of the playoff games in the past weeks. First, my wife and I attended the Bulls v Indy on September 6th, a game that they won 10-3. They went on to win the next game in Durham taking a 2-0 game lead in the best of 5 series. Traveling to Indianapolis, the Bulls dropped their next game, but won the 4th to win the series and advance to the championship playoff against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, meaning they would return to Durham for the first of five games.
Jen and I attended the September 14th game with 10 other friends and enjoyed the weather, each other, and the return of all-you-can-eat concessions. They won the game the night before 6-0. Unfortunately, this evening they lost 4-0 and headed to Moosic, PA for the final games of the series. Winning game three 6-2 put them in perfect position to close out the series with a 6-4 win on Friday night September 15th, crowning them the International League Champions!
They added to their prior championships from 2002, 2003, 2009 and 2013.
Now they play the winner of the Pacific Coast League Championship, the Memphis Redbirds, in a “winner takes all” one game playoff for the Triple A National Championship that will take place at PNC field in Moosic, PA on September 19th. They beat the Redbirds for their only Triple A National Championship in 2009.
It’s too late this year to see the Bulls play, but make plans for next spring and get out to see a great team in one of the premier baseball stadiums in the country.
