Durham is home to some of the best restaurants in the South. In 2013, Southern Living declared Durham the “The South’s Tastiest Town” and that title is being reinforced with the nomination of three Durham chefs as 2015 James Beard Award Semifinalists.

Represented in the “Best Chef: Southeast” category is Scott Howell of Nana’s and Matthew Kelly of Mateo. In the national category of “Outstanding Baker,” Phoebe Lawless of Scratch Bakery is a semi-finalist. We love seeing our Downtown Durham neighbors being recognized on the national food scene―If you haven’t dined at these local Durham establishments, now is the time to visit them!

This is the 25th anniversary for the prestigious food award, known as “The Oscars of Food.” After an open call of almost 35,000 nominations, a committee of food critics and journalists narrowed down the list in each category. Voting to determine the final 5 comes from former winners and members of the awards committee members. The final nominees for all awards categories will be announced on Tuesday, March 24 in New York CIty.
