Mary was raised in Utah. Her first touch with real estate was learning about the aesthetic, structural and communitarian aspects of architecture from her two favorite architects—her grandfather and father. Escorting her father on school site inspections, she developed her interest in teaching and chose to graduate as an elementary education major. She and her husband then moved to North Carolina to pursue professional and graduate school. Twenty-eight years later, they enjoy three children, a son-in law, a grandson and a dachshund named “Weenie Belle”.
What did you do before real estate? Between having children, I taught in many positions in the Durham and Chapel Hill Public Schools. I have tutored at the Hill Center and worked as a mentor teacher and tennis coach. I have also been the office manager for the Real Estate Section of a Law Firm.
What do you do outside of work? I enjoy spending time with my family by going to the museums, violin recitals, Broadway plays, and sporting events. I also love to play competitive tennis with friends, run with my daughter, play the piano, garden (whenever the weather allows), snow ski and read literature for my book clubs.
What organizations get your time and money? Habitat for Humanity, Caring House, Durham Public Schools, Durham Academy and the USTA.
How would you spend $100 in Durham? I would take my two wonderful daughters, ages 28 and 8, to see a Broadway Play at the Durham Performing Arts Center. All three of us have been students within the past few months, so we would be able to purchase the incredible student discount passes ($66.00). I would take my amazing grandson to one of the local parks to play, and then surprise him with a new Thomas the Train piece at the Play House Toy Store on Ninth Street ($15.00). My 6' 4" always hungry, growing son would be home from college, so I would like to treat him to a burger and fries from the Only Burger Truck ($6.50). My husband, the voracious reader, would appreciate a new book from the Regulator Bookstore ($12.50).
Where was your most recent restaurant visit? Revolution where we had a memorable family celebration.
What book are you currently reading? The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.
