Lou has lived in Durham since 1994. He moved here with his wife, Allison, who teaches at Duke Law School. He lives in the Watts Hillandale neighborhood with his family, Alex, a teenager and aspiring saxophone virtuoso, Maggie, a middle school entrepreneur, Keats, a sweet, oversized mongrel, and Lucy, a slightly deranged but beautiful Australian shepherd.

Lou studied art, engineering, and architecture, and has degrees from Colgate University and Arizona State. He loves to travel, and studied abroad in Denmark and India.

What did you do before real estate?  I worked in the design and construction fields, for architecture firms, construction management companies, and contractors. I have continued my involvement in design and renovation since becoming a broker.

What do you do outside of work?  There’s lots of music all the time in my house. Everyone in the family plays several instruments. Fortunately our neighbors are pretty tolerant, since the mix includes, trumpet, saxophone, and my daughter’s huge drum set, which we all find time to bang on. I like to have coffee or lunch with friends who support me in my “wonderings” and are willing to explore a varied range of topics. On my block, I’m Mr. Fixit, the guy with the most tools (although I can’t always find them).

What organizations get your time and money?  Although my children have aged out of elementary school, E.K. Powe holds a special place in my heart. I worked for many years on its PTA board and still support it as best I can. I also support, Durham Rescue Mission, Housing for New Hope, AIDS Walk, and WNCU, a great jazz station.

How would you spend $100 in Durham?  I’d stop in at POSH the Salon, for a haircut, glass of wine, and the latest on what’s happening downtown. Then, a walk up the street to Beyu for music, dinner and dessert (check out those cakes.)

Where was your most recent restaurant visit? Saigon Grill for grilled pork vermicelli

What book are you currently reading? Hunger Game series by Suzanne Collins, Balinese Wajang Koelit and its Music by Colin McPhee
