Kelly moved to Durham in 2007 after graduation from Radford University to be near her then finance, Andres. Andres and Kelly live in a townhouse in South Durham. Although different from the town she grew up in, Lancaster, Pa., Kelly loves Durham and can't picture herself anywhere else. She loves the energy Durham has to offer from all the amazing restaurants, to the unique festivals to the beautiful places to walk and enjoy nature.
What did you do before real estate? I taught at Hope Valley Elementary School for four years. I taught both fourth and fifth grade.
What do you do outside of work? Outside of work I like to stay active by walking The Duke Forest and taking yoga classes at Inside Out Body Therapies. I enjoy going out to eat at the many restaurants Durham has to offer. Some of my favorites include Chai's, Indian Food on Wheels, Rue Cler and Local Yogurt. I also love to cook at home with my husband using ingredients we picked up at the farmer's market. One of my favorite weekend activities is to head over to the library to borrow books and movies where I will often run into old students of mine.
What organizations get your time and money? The Junior League of Durham and Orange County, TROSA, SEEDS and Kiva.org.
How would you spend $100 in Durham? I would start my morning at the Farmer's Market. I would buy a doughnut muffin from Scratch $2 and a cup of coffee from Ninth Street Bakery which is name your own price so I will pay $2 for that. I will pick up some mozzarella from Chapel Hill Creamery and some tomatoes, basil and peaches from Lyon Farms. (about $20) I will head over to Morgan Imports and pick up a picnic blanket. ($25) I would then go over to Sutton Station and pick up a bottle of wine from Danny at The Wine Cellar. ($15) While in Sutton Station I will head over to The Merry Martini and purchase a Scout cooler from Kelly. ($25) I will then head next door to see Carlos at Dulce. I will order an iced tea and some gazpacho soup which comes with a mini grilled cheese. ($7) While I am there I will pick up a piece of chocolate mouse cake to go. ($4) When I get home I will pack my new cooler up for a picnic at Duke Gardens. I will make caprese salad with my tomatoes, mozzarella and basil from the farmer's market. I will pack my peaches and chocolate cake for dessert and of course I will not forget my bottle of wine. My husband and I will grab the cooler, blanket and a frisbee and head over to the gardens.
Where was your most recent restaurant visit? Mad Hatter Bakeshop and Cafe.......my favorite breakfast spot!
What book are you currently reading? Picking Cotton by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino, Ronald Cotton and Erin Tomeo
