Courtney James Broker-in-Charge, Managing Partner (919) 291-2318 courtneyjames@urbandurham.com |
Courtney is a graduate of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN where she majored in Neuropsychology and Women’s Studies. She and her family are happy to call Durham “home”. Courtney is supported daily by her wonderful husband, Luke, and daughters, Madeleine, Lillian, and Penelope, as well as her two dogs, Sadie and Thibodeaux. Additionally, her three siblings and their families have joined them in the area. Ten cousins under the age of 10 tend to foster some chaotic family dinners!
What did you do before real estate? I managed an implementation department at a healthcare technology company that trained physicians to use handheld computers to enter diagnoses and procedures.
What do you do outside of work? I enjoy playing outside with my kids, reading, decorating (and reading about decorating), yoga, and running (although for shorter distances now).
What organizations get your time and money? I am a member of the Forest Hills Neighborhood Association Board, I volunteer for Girls on the Run and support SEEDS and Housing for New Hope, among others. I also spend lots of time at my daughter’s schools, Morehead Montessori, and MCHD.
How would you spend $100 in Durham? I’ve gotten into a habit of writing my “How Would I Spend $100” essays in a particular theme. This time around, I’ve decided to write it in the spirit of, “I’m going on a picnic and I am going to bring an apple, a banana, a cake, etc”. Since going to 26 places will certainly cost me more than $100, I’ve decided to make this a two part series. This time around you’ll see the first part of the alphabet and next time around I’ll hit N-Z. So without further ado, I am going on an adventure in Durham and I am going to spend $100. My adventure will start at Amelia’s Café for a cup of coffee, and then I’ll head to Beyu for a pastry. Once I’m full, I’ll start my shopping at the Chapel Hill Creamery at the farmer’s market for some fresh cheese and then on to Daisy Cakes for something sweet to bring home. I’ll take a break from food to go buy something unique at Exotique and then go back to food and get some Seven Pepper Jelly from Foster’s, and since Guglhupf’s is next door, I’ll have to stop in to get that fruit tart that my daughter keeps asking about. Now I may have to limit this one to browsing, but I can’t resist going into Hamilton Hill and seeing what I might put on my wish list. As I continue through Brightleaf Square, I pick up a copy of the Independent Weekly, which is thankfully free! By this time, I feel like I need to take a break from the adventure so I slip on over James Joyce for a pint. I am almost done with my adventure but before I’m done, I am going to make the trek to Kiefer Landscaping because I know that I need to buy some seedlings for the garden. As I round out my adventure, I’ll head back into downtown and hit LaborLove Gallery for a funky t-shirt and lastly Magpie for a yummy smelling perfume stick.
Where was your most recent restaurant visit? Watt’s Grocery – it was an amazing meal where my husband and I were able to celebrate Mardi Gras Tuesday!
What book are you currently reading? I have been on a parenting-book frenzy. I recently finished reading How to Talk so Your Kids Will Listen and Listen So Your Kids Will Talk and Siblings Without Rivalries, both by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. I also recently finished The Blessing of a Skinned Knee by Wendy Mogel. I really enjoyed all three of these books.
