Born and raised in Austin, TX, Ashley moved to Durham with her inventive and charming husband, who is a resident at Duke. She is a graduate of the University of Texas’ somewhat self-directed photojournalism program, where she was given a solid opportunity to explore her disproportionate love for most anything curious and unusual. She decidedly misses some things about Texas, but with its well-earned foodie reputation, artistic character, & friendly faces, Durham doesn’t feel that far from home…and she’s happy to call herself a Durhamite.

What did you do before real estate? A little bit of everything: taught graphic design at the University of Texas at Austin, traveled through Mongolia with a camera, worked as an art director for an architectural magazine, managed client accounts for a pr company, and did a fair share of freelance photography and graphic design.

What do you do outside of work? I take photos around Durham; pick up design work when I can; play tennis; and I’m on a homesteading kick that's stuck – gardening, pickling, beekeeping...and I'm still steadfastly trying to perfect my homemade strawberry ice cream.

What organizations get your time and money? The Emily Krzyzewski Center, SEEDS, Habitat for Humanity.

How would you spend $100 in Durham? I’d support local arts, and while $100 doesn’t go far in the art world, I’d do my best to spread the wealth. I’d visit Horse & Buggy Press to see what fine printed work they might be selling, the Nasher Museum of Art to take a look at their exhibitions ($5), I'd stop in and talk to some of the studio artists at Golden Belt, and I'd buy a ticket to a show at Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC).

Where was your most recent restaurant visit? Piedmont. Go there.

What book are you currently reading? James Lipton's An Exaltation of Larks and Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything.
